Mike Vallely was just 14 years old the first time he saw Black Flag play live. It was October 1984, at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ. The group was in the midst of a particularly creative year that yielded three bedrock West Coast hardcore punk albums—Slip It In, My War, Family Man—and a blistering live tape, Live ’84.

“Henry Rollins was fronting the band then, and seeing them play that show was a life-affirming moment for me,” Vallely says. “It changed my life, but more so, I say it was life-affirming, because it made me feel like, ‘OK, I can continue on my own path. I can do what I want to do in this life… Rollins, as the frontman of the band, really embodied that spirit.”

Rasheeda Ali’s Tuesday Night Musicians Jam Session celebrates one year of building community January 21 at Elliott Street Deli & Pub

Tonight (Tuesday, January 21), Rasheeda “Ra Flautista” Ali celebrates the one-year anniversary of her weekly Tuesday Night Musicians Jam Session at Elliott Street Deli & Pub. Each week, Ali leads an ever-changing cast of Atlanta’s finest players in a serpentine set that channels musical inflections from the furthest regions of the cosmos, all in the name of ecstatic communal revelry — no two nights are ever the same.

The lineup for this evening includes performances by Ra along with a parade of musicians including Byron the Aquarius, Ayo Cooley, Dee Ingram, Chocolat Costa, Ant Dixon, and more.

“We are truly stepping into the unknown tonight,” Ra says. “We’re keeping it in the avant-garde musical tradition, celebrating a full year of building a musical community, pushing the limits of freedom of expression, and challenging ourselves to be active and better listeners on stage.”

Tonight’s the house band starts at 9 p.m. — a little earlier than usual. The improv jam fires up afterward and runs through 2 a.m. Expect an evening on non-stop African polyrhythms, Latin flair, Eastern textures, jazz, funk, and improvisation a distinctly Atlanta-centric flare.

Oh-OK, Love Tractor feature story in Flagpole Magazine

Love Tractor and Oh-OK are two bands inextricably linked by time and space—meaning, of course, that they both played hands-on roles in shaping Athens’ hallowed alternative rock scene at the dawn of the 1980s. Both groups shared practice spaces and stages and even brandished the mark of Atlanta’s DB Recs alongside the B-52s, Pylon and the Method Actors. But despite coming of age amid the same college town music scene, stylistically speaking, their sounds could not be more disparate.

A) between 4:30 and 5 p.m. To participate, arrive early and purchase Hive Mind on CD or LP at the shop on the day of show to get a wristband at the cash register. Criminal will have a limited quantity of alternative titles for those who have already bought the new album at the store.

On December 28, intrepid photographer Mike White of Deadly Designs made the trek from Athens to Nashville to bring back these 10 photos of the Jesus Lizard live at Marathon Music Works. Frontman David Yow, bass player David Wm. Sims, guitarist Duane Denison, and drummer and Atlanta expat Mac McNeilly tore through a 24-song set that included one previously unreleased number titled “Lord Godiva.”
